Devotees in Manila began the Good Friday observance with the image of Jesus Nazareno already out on the streets of Quiapo before midnight. GMA News reported that the image was brought out of Quiapo Church at 11:33 p.m. on Thursday, or more than 20 minutes ahead of the originally scheduled 12 midnight start.
As of the report’s posting, the procession was already crossing Quezon Boulevard. Church officials said the devotional event was being led by the Hijos del Nazareno together with the faithful known as the Mamamasan, the bearers tasked with carrying the revered image during the annual rite.
Quiapo Church explained that the Good Friday morning procession is meant to recall the bitterness of Christ’s passion, from carrying the cross to the final hours of crucifixion and death. It is one of the key observances for devotees during Holy Week, kaya ramdam talaga ang solemn vibe sa paligid kahit dis-oras na ng gabi.
There was no Mass scheduled at the church for the occasion, but the faithful were invited to join prayers beginning at 6 a.m. The church also said the procession was expected to return before 12 noon, giving devotees several hours to take part in prayers and accompanying rites.
In a social media prayer shared by the church, devotees asked Jesus Nazareno for protection, stronger faith, peace for the nation, and unity among Filipinos. The message captured the tone of the procession itself: deeply religious, community-centered, and focused on sacrifice, hope, and trust.
